What’s the Difference Between Hybrid and Electric Cars?

Hybrid and electric cars are both better for the environment than cars fueled solely by gasoline. Hybrid vehicles such as the BMW 330e use power from both an electric motor and gasoline engine.

All-electric vehicles like the BMW iX xDrive50 use only electricity for power. This means electric vehicles offer zero tailpipe emissions and do not require any gasoline.

How Does EV Charging Work?

Charging your electric vehicle can be done at home or at a public charging station. Public EV charging stations operate similarly to gas stations but instead of a gas pump, you will find cords to plug-in your vehicle.

There are three levels of EV charging that vary in voltage used and length of time to charge.

What is Level 1 Charging?

Level 1 charging uses a typical 120-volt outlet and is most often used at home. With the charging cord that comes with your EV, you can get nearly a full charge overnight. This kind of charging is great for everyday commutes and driving, though you may need more power for longer road trips.

What is Level 2 Charging?

Level 2 charging can be installed in your home and is often the kind of charger you will find at a public charging station. These types of chargers use 240-volt outlets and can provide an 80% charge in about eight hours.

What is DC Fast Charging?

The fastest kind of EV charging currently available is DC Fast charging. DC Fast charging is most often seen at public charging stations along major highways. In just about an hour, a DC Fast charger offers a full charge.
