Why Electric Cars are Better Than Hybrid Cars

With two new BMW EV models arriving at BMW of Wesley Chapel, performance car buyers will have more options, and a difficult choice to make. Are you better off with a hybrid car or an electric vehicle? As it turns out, EVs are better by nearly every metric.

Why Electric Cars are Better Than Hybrid Cars

Electric Cars are Greener than Hybrids

Plug-in hybrids, or PHEVs, seem like a no-brainer at first. They offer limited all-electric range in addition to the ability to drive with a gas engine for long distances. That’s better than nothing, but it’s still a long way from “green.”

A vehicle like the BMW iX, on the other hand, is all-electric. There are fewer emissions involved in its manufacture, and none produced at all by the vehicle’s operation. That makes it the more environmentally friendly option by far.

Electric Cars are Lower-Maintenance

Hybrids and EVs both use battery packs and one or more electric motors. However, the similarities end there. After all, hybrids’ internal-combustion engines, and their transmissions, are both very maintenance-intensive.

An EV from our BMW dealership in Wesley Chapel, FL, on the other hand, has no engine and no transmission. There’s still some maintenance required for systems like brakes, steering, and electrical, but it’s less frequent, less complex, and less costly, than maintaining a comparable hybrid.

Electric Cars Perform Better

Seasoned drivers will appreciate EVs’ performance advantages over hybrids as well. Besides larger battery packs that lead to a lower center of gravity and better handling, EVs have a significant torque advantage.

A vehicle like the BMW 430i offers up to 295 lb-ft of torque, but it doesn’t reach peak output until its engine reaches the 1,550 to 4,400 RPM range; this is called a “torque curve.” In contrast, the BMW i4 eDrive40 has no curve to speak of. Its 317 lb-ft of torque and 335 horsepower are available from a dead stop, making for a much different (and more exciting) driving dynamic.

EVs Can Be More Affordable

Yes, you read that correctly. In addition to BMW financing, our EVs qualify for rebates and tax credits that are higher than they’d be for hybrid models, making them more affordable than you may have realized.
