BMW Service Tips: Changing a Flat Tire

October 5th, 2021 by

There’s nothing more frustrating than hearing a loud popping noise behind the wheel. When you encounter a flat tire on the road, knowing how to quickly change it can be extremely helpful when you need to get somewhere quickly.

Here at our BMW service center in Wesley Chapel, FL, our mechanics would like to provide you with a handy guide on how to change a flat tire.

What You’ll Need

Before heading out on the road, it’s important that you have these items on hand in your BMW car

  • Jack
  • Lug wrench
  • Fully inflated spare tire
  • Owner’s manual
  • Flashlight
  • Rain poncho
  • Gloves

Changing the Tire

When your tire blows out, your first step is to find a safe location out of the way of traffic. Your vehicle’s owner’s manual will often have specific steps on how to change the tire, but here is a brief step-by-step overview:

  1. Turn on your hazard lights and apply your parking brake.
  2. Get out of your car and apply wheel wedges to your tires. Remove the hubcap of the affected wheel and loosen the lugnuts (don’t completely unscrew them).
  3. Place the jack under your vehicle and raise it. Once your vehicle is high enough, unscrew the lugnuts.
  4. Remove the flat tire and mount the spare on the lug bolts.
  5. Tighten the lugnuts slightly, lower your vehicle, and then completely tighten the lugnuts.
  6. Lower your vehicle to the ground and replace hubcap. Before you get back on the road, double-check the pressure of your spare tire to see if it’s sufficient.

After changing your tire, make sure to bring your vehicle to BMW of Wesley Chapel so we can install a full-sized tire. Schedule an appointment with our BMW service experts today!
