electric BMW cars

With electric BMW cars becoming increasingly popular, more drivers are interested in getting behind the wheel of models like the BMW i4 and BMW i7. One of the most common questions that we receive about electric BMW cars is related to how long they last compared to gasoline-powered cars.

While electric cars haven’t been on the market nearly long enough for there to be a definitive answer to this question, there is some data that our dealers can share.

Electric Car Lifespan

Because electric cars are newer to the market compared to gasoline cars, there is less data on how long they last over the long term. However, there was a recent study in Joule that indicated that estimated the cost of owning an electric vehicle over the course of 15 years and 161,729 vehicle miles traveled.

It found that overall lifetime vehicle costs were as much as $15,000 less for electric cars versus gasoline cars, largely due to the lower maintenance and fuel costs.

How Long Do Electric Car Batteries Last?

Electric car batteries are one of the priciest BMW parts in electric BMW cars, and thus drivers are often curious how long they will last before needing to be replaced. There is some data on this question, as the pioneering BMW i3 first launched in North America in May of 2014. BMW is one of the first EV manufacturers to offer a clear battery capacity loss warranty and has guaranteed EV capacity of at least 70 percent for eight years or 100,000 miles.
