EV Charging

With the increased popularity of EV BMW cars like the BMW iX xDrive50 and the BMW i4 eDrive40, more and more drivers are wondering how they can install an EV charging station at their home. Here at BMW of Wesley Chapel, our dealers not only explain all the advanced features of EV BMW cars, but we also are happy to share tips on how to install an EV charging station.

Installing a Level 1 Electric Vehicle Charger

Having the option to charge your electric car at home is crucial to ensuring that you’re charged up and ready to go when it is necessary. Level 1 EV chargers come with your EV BMW car and do not require any kind of special installation.

Simply plug your Level 1 charger into a standard 120-volt wall outlet and you’ll be ready to hit the road. This charging system can be set up without the help of a professional.

Installing a Level 2 Electric Vehicle Charger

BMW electric vehicles, like the BMW i4, also have the option of a Level 2 charger. This type of charger requires 240 volts of electricity and gives you the benefit of faster charging time. However, it requires a special installation procedure, as a standard wall outlet only provides 120 volts.

The Level 2 installation requires running 240 volts from your circuit breaker panel to your charging location. A double-pole circuit breaker needs to be attached to two 120-volt buses at once to double the circuit voltage to 240 volts, using a four-strand cable.

While you technically can do this on your own, we highly recommend enlisting the assistance of a professional electrician, as making an error with the installation can cause damage to your vehicle.
