What Is BMW Digital Key?

The metal car key is quickly becoming a thing of the past for BMW drivers. One of the many advanced technology features found in new BMW cars, the BMW Digital Key transforms your compatible smartphone into a versatile tool for accessing your vehicle remotely. Here at BMW of Wesley Chapel, we love to show off how BMW Digital Key can simplify your daily commute.
How Does BMW Digital Key Work?
This advanced system uses Near Field Communication (NFC) or Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology to communicate with your BMW car’s internal computer. Depending on your specific BMW model, you can unlock your doors simply by holding your phone near the driver’s side door handle. Once you’re inside the vehicle, simply placing the device on the wireless charging tray or keeping it in your pocket allows you to press the start button and drive away. Additionally, you can share access with family members or friends by sending them a temporary digital pass via your smartphone’s wallet app.
How Do You Set Up BMW Digital Key?
Activating BMW Digital Key is a simple process managed entirely through the My BMW App® on your compatible Apple, Google, or Samsung smartphone. In order to get the feature set up, you must have both of your physical key fobs present in the cabin during the initial pairing process to verify ownership. Most new BMW models produced after the summer of 2020 are equipped with BMW Digital Key, but for specific advice, refer to your car’s manual. Once the system has been activated, it will even function for a short time after your phone’s battery has died, which ensures that you are never locked out.
